Description

Oops, yet another aviation shot. Well, when you take 475 pictures in a five hour period of time and only have to throw 50 away, you have a lot to work with :-) I couldn't resist posting this shot. It is unretouched in any way except for cropping and adding a frame. Usually, I would sharpen it a bit but to do so here would take away the hand-painted quality. What do you think? What we have here is an F-18F Super Hornet whose pilot is just transitioning into a high speed, steep climb. The vapor trails coming off the engine nacels are the result of the plane violently disturbing the air. Not only is the aircraft turning upward but it still has a component of forward momentum causing it to mush through the air a bit as it changes direction. From a photographic standpoint, my original capture was big sky, small airplane. My 150mm zoom lens and what Olympus calls a "SHQ" jpeg setting, yielded a high pixel count file (5-6MB) thus enabling me to crop most of the sky away resulting in this close up, relatively detailed view. My guess is this fellow was at least 10,000 feet away from me when this shot was taken. He looked small to the naked eye. Suggestions? This was my first venture into long range, high speed photography. Bill

It's a great shot, my friend. It works well despite the cropping you've carried out! Fantastic. Were you using the highest pixel setting on the camera for this shot? Rob.
