Description

Some of the area along the edges are loose and ready to fall. Part of that mound (top right) had collapse and several other benches in the general areas had disappeared since I had first started this series. The explosions did tone down some as it has done so many times in the past. You never know when it will happen again. Standing here in the danger zone taking this picture wasn't part of this hiking plans. After visiting a skylight about a quarter of a mile away, we were about to call it a day. My wife, grandson and I came across this young girl who looked very confused and depressed. She had camped out the night before, left her backpack things on the ground and walked a little distance away thinking it was just next to her. And when she turned around, she just could not find it. It is so easy to lose things in the dark especially when most of the lava rocks are blackish in color. All the reason my hiking gear has some kind of reflection tape (learned my lesson before). I told her that I did see something but thought it was part of someone else equipment in the area. Anyway, we thought we'd help her out, spread out and headed towards this area. Of course I did not allow my grandson and wife to follow me here in the danger zone. Well, I am here anyway...got some pictures and headed back. I could see something different in the distance. It was the young girls backpack. Now to return it to her is another problem. Where did she go? We headed back to the general direction where we left her, got lucky and found her. To make a long story short, it was One Happy Ending for her. For us, it was rewarding to see someone smile and give thanks. Aloha and thank you for viewing. ps. "See Punaguys Gallery" . He has some colorful and interesting pictures of the volcano.
