Description

Hatton Garden, the centre of Londons Diamond and Jewellry trade. Number 15 is where diamonds are fingerprinted, Da Beers' diamond merchants are round the corner at Holborn Viaduct. However we are slipping through a dark passageway between numbers 8 & 9 it makes a far more spooky image lol. Halfway through the passage we passed The Mitre pub and we surfaced on the other side into Ely Place. ELY PLACE a private road which used to be the residence of the Bishop of Ely. Its now owned by the Crown and is not subject to the London Mayer and is indeed NOT PART of The City of London that surrounds it! (somewhat like the Vatican). The police can only enter if invited by the commissionaire. Here SHAKESPEARE sited one of his most famous speeches 'This sceptered Isle"... by John of Gaunt who actually lived here in 1381. The Bishops residence frequently entertained Royalty... one notable Banquet in 1531 included 4,000 Larks ! all information credited to this link - http://www.londontourist.org/citywalk1.html

I'm with Andrea on this Alan, a place like this on a misty night, you could bump into Jack the Ripper or Mr Hyde. Lol. Excellent capture and narrative Alan, I have never toured London, the only times I have been there I was driving a delivery wagon way back in 1969. I have no intention of going back there either, it was bad enough then, with the traffic that is. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!

Great shot Alan, I have walked this path many times as a Londoner, remarkable that a Norther man, using a server in America, enlightens an old Londoner to facts he didn't know, about something just around the corner.. :))...Oh well I guess when you live with it, you take it for granted...Nice work mate... PS: Did the website also stress that this was a popular short cut for Saucy Jackie..It always entrigues me, that they couldn't catch him, yet knew all his haunts :)...Or is that just the tourist industry tagging on the info for poularity?...Wo can know?
