Description

Charterhouse Street, SMITHFIELD, the heart of Londons Meat Trade, a massive place that stetches out over half a mile! we walked on and on and on past the buildings, I didn't realise how huge this place is. I would have loved to see it as a hive of activity, it was all shuttered up when we were passing.

Nice duo Alan, when I worked for Initial City Link, I used to park my Lorry near these phone boxes, and have my sarnie and hot tea :)

The big ironwork inside looks vintage turn of the century (19 to 20). Is that about right...maybe a little earlier? Like the way you've put these two pictures together. Bill

I love that right side shot! It has a cozy feel to it. Yes, a meat market with a cozy feel... :-) I bet it has quite a history.

Good set of photos here. I think they would have looked even better with a bit of selective colouring.

Hmmmmm. Something about this rings a bell. I think Elizabeth George used this setting in one of her Inspector Lynley mysteries. (I could easily be wrong about that!)

I used to go to the Old Smithfield Market in Manchester and the new one up Ashton Road, but I have never visited this one in London. Excellent captures Alan, nice to see the old phone boxes as well, they are far and few between nowadays. Did you know all Heywood boxes were changed to accept cards only, there were that many of them robbed when they were coin boxes. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!! If I don't see you today, I will pick you up at 06:00 on Tuesday.

Brilliant photos, so much history in this place. As a veggie its my nightmare, however, I do appreciate history and all that it entails.
