Description

Our most recent trip to the Gulf Coast was last May, and it's been far too long since we've been away. A planned trip there next weekend (9/13 & 14) has been postponed because Hurricane Ike could possibly strike the Gulf Coast somewhere a day or two before. So, our return has been postponed for at least another week; possibly longer depending on where Ike hits landfall. So I went back and looked at the pictures Leah (Lil' Sizzler) and I took at sunrise last May on Pensacola Beach, and I found this one I had somehow previously overlooked. Check out the sculptured sand on the left. So this will have to do for now. Hopefully we'll have some new one in a couple of weeks. But this Hurricane Ike is a bad one. The meteorologist where I work says this one will be the storm of the season we'll remember. Louisiana just got slammed by Gustav - real bad too. Of course because it hit the rural areas instead of the politically sensitive New Orleans the drive-by media forgot it the next day. No story. But the costal areas and Cajun country were devastated. And Pensacola still hasn't recovered from the massive destruction from Hurricane Ivan that landed just west of the city (putting P'cola on the dangerous side of the storm) back on September 16, 2004. I visited the city in November 2004, and many areas looked like the storm had hit just days before. There are still wide sections of Pensacola Beach that used to be accessible by auto that are still out of reach. So I guess the point of all this is that Hurricane Ike is most likely going to be a real problem wherever it lands. I only hope my favorite beach featured here is still around next week at this time. Beautiful scene, the sand is just gorgeous. These storms are nasty, and I know we don't hear what REALLY goes on; thanks for the reminder.

The sculptured sand is beautiful but sad; erosion takes back so much beachfront. Absolutely gorgeous photo!
