Description

At Dulles Udvar-Hazy annex. It is the only example of its type. Notice liquid fueled reusable RATO pods under the wings. The white disks are parachutes. The yellow aircraft in the background is the restored Northrop N-1M, the Flying Wing concept. The gyrocopter on the right was used by German submarines, stored in pods, and towed to see above the horizon. They were reeled back to the deck after the mission. The small white bomb next to the rheintochter SAM is the Fritz X the first smart bomb. Radio controlled from a Heinkel 111 mothership, gyroscopically stabilized, and guided to target by a joystick it had a few successes. However, it was a slow gravity bomb and the mothership had to fly slow and loiter in the area. Most were jumped by fighters.

There was a time when configuration freeze meant something other than deciding just how big of a twin to make with engines hung in nacelles on the wing and a empennage at the rear with stabilizers coming out of the fuselage low down. JATO or RATO was all the rage for a time then it passed. Parachutes to slow the descent of a really thin clean wing also passed. No slats, no flaps, we're coming in hot. Fortuantely we have no carrier just a tiny submarine deck.

Nice shot. I see they have a couple other German missles to go with it.

Great shot. Good for us that a lot of these technological leaps forward were never fully backed/pushed/allowed to be fully developed by Hitler. Had he not scattered his armed forces all over the map and concentrated his efforts, he might have been more successful. Bill

For a flight simulation fanatic like me, this capture means a lot, it is really gorgeous and points to a time when courageaous pilots defended their country whatever the outcome of the war.

I'll say again that this is a much better display than when I visited two years ago. I'm glad that they moved it from the dark corner overflowing with other Luftwaffe planes. Thanks for the great overhead view!
