Description

Among Crater Lake's many fascinating geological features is a small island. In foggy conditions, the island looks very much like a ship. Hence, it was named "Phantom Ship." We got up early on a 26 degree F morning to try to get some sunrise shots, but the sunrise was not interesting. But we did get some nice photos before the wind came up, and before the sun washed out the color. Again, I didn't change the color of this; it really looked this blue. Deb and I have finally gotten around to starting a web site at Smugmug. There are more vacation photos there, so take a look if you get the urge. Thanks for the views and comments.

Beautiful and accurate visual record of this awesome place!! Both this pic, and your previous panoramic shot of Crater lake are best viewed in the larger size. And yes, I agree, it really is that blue! Perhaps it is the incredible purity and clarity of the lake water that makes it so. :-)

Stunning and captivating scenery. Very interesting story. I imagine that could of been much the confusion for seeing it the first time on a foggy moonlit night.

Wonderful shot! Stunning place this is, and it would be so cool to be at ground level and see this 'phantom ship' in the fog and mist!

This brings back memories. My mom & dad took us there when I was about 14. It was the second week in June, & the lodge had opened that day! The snow was still higher than I was tall by a long ways. It was seriously cold then too. I remember the island very well. We could see it from our room. Thanks for the memory. JDoc

What a wonderful picture. So blue. Amazing. Looks like foam on the water. Since it's a lake, I don't expect it is, but it's lovely.
