Description

Only the second time I have seen one of these this summer. Caught this one by chance. I was talking to my cat that was under the hedge and I noticed out of the corner of my eye this big SOB perched on a leaf. This one was about 2.5 inches long! And as you can see, he has lunch. A common bee. I got about 8-10 shots before he flew off to a near by flag pole up high. Got a couple more on there before he split completely. :-( Anyway, enjoy all... Thanks for looking and all your kind words. -Bruce This was taken with a Canon XTi, w/50mm 2.5 compact macro. I took off the hoya +4 close up because of the large size of this insect.

Smooth composition and striking colors, really a nature magazine-worthy documentation of bug murder. The way the sunlight makes the fly's fur stand out while the shadow of the plant partly obscures the bee (but not so we can't see what's happening) is quite dramatic. A truly amazing photo.
