Description

The Desert Dome at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is the world's largest indoor desert at around 42,000 sq. ft. It features desert scenes and animals from five continents. The dome is 137 feet tall and 230 feet in diameter. Its 1760 acrylic windows make it the world's largest glazed geodesic dome. It cost 31.5 million dollars and opened in 2002. (info from Wiki). I posted about a dozen images from this zoo earlier, with more on my own website not posted here. One snakes though a very well designed maze of habitats cleverly isolated by the rock and sand features and is a striking feature at the zoo that was even showcased on a tv series about zoos around the country several years ago. Thank you very kindly for your recent views and comments and for having a look here.

Ah ha, I didn't see the rock inside at first...do now and your notes make the entire presentation very interesting. I've heard Omaha Zoo is one of the best in the country...certainly in the heartland. Good shooting. Bill

This is a very impressive dome and an excellent shot of it. Your info was interesting, too. I would love to visit this except I could do just fine with seeing just a few snakes, or none.

A wonderful bit of architecture and wonderfully captured, though maybe the bio dome at the Eden project may give it a run for it's money

Oh yes, this must be a product of Buckminster Fuller! Stellar POV, clarity, detail and lighting in this magnificent capture of the geodesic dome, in all its glory, Maria! Is that a sleeping ape inside?

It looks something like the domes at the Eden Project in Cornwall, see here: http://www.edenproject.com/ Not a desert under those though. A very impressive structure, I wouldn't mind visiting there myself. Excellent capture. Bravo!!!!!
