Description

This beautiful animal ran across the road in front of us as we traveled across Montana. Pronghorns are amazingly fast runners even maintaining their speed for great distances although they are very poor at jumping and have learned how to crawl under fences very quickly. It took only 4/100's of a second for him to crawl under this fence and be back up ready to run on the other side. This guy paused only long enough for me to snap off a few pics then he was gone. Hope you like it. Thanks for taking a look

True, very fast. I clocked one at 45 mph, and that was no racetrack under his hooves. Most graceful when running. In the next few weeks (October-November), they'll start running in bands of maybe 30 head - all shoulder-to-shoulder - and for the apparent joy of running. Nothing challenges them as their routes weave here and there. Ranchers would rather not have them around. The BLM and other agencies keep the ranchers from drawing the lowest barbed wire tight. With it semi-loose, the antelope can dive under. Ugliest action you've ever seen: from 20 or 30 mph to a nose-first dive, and away. I took care of an oil property for ten years about 30 miles northeast of Rawlins, Wyoming. That area yielded most of the "Boone and Crockett" trophies on record (Carbon County, Wyoming). I'm not a hunter. They say antelope meat tastes like how a wet dog smells. If the animal has been running before harvesting, that's too true. "Friends" were always glad to share. Dick
