If this is a prairie dog they form colonies of mounds leading into interconnected burrows. Usually one is a sentinel and barks at approaching invaders to their territory to alert the others. It can get cute as you approach one, he'll duck in and another one will pop up a little further away and resume the barking. This happens continually until you clear their area, sometimes many all at once will appear and hurl a chorus of barks at you. When I lived in Colorado 15+ years ago I rode a bike trail that went by several of these colonies. In the southeast of the state a colony was mildly infected with bubonic plague. Don't be fooled by that "cuteness". Great picture!
