The Meteor Crater, sometimes known as the Barringer Crater and formerly as the Canyon Diablo crater, is an impact crater, located about 35 miles (55 km) east of Flagstaff, near Winslow in the northern Arizona desert (USA). Its elevation is 1744 m (5,723 ft). The crater is somewhat misnamed, as it was actually excavated by a meteorite, not a meteor.
The crater is about 4,000 ft in width, and some 170 m deep (550 ft). It is surrounded by a 45 m (150 ft) high rim of rock, raised above the surrounding plains by the force of the impact. The bottom of the crater is filled with rubble from the impact, to a depth of 210-240 m (700-800 ft) below the crater's center.the circumference is 2.4 miles.if the Washington monument was placed inside the top would be eye level from the rim

Excellent image. The snow helps bring out detail in the far wall. Yeah, we've been pounded more than a few times. For a gallery of impact craters: http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagegallery/igviewer.php?imgid=274&gid=21

A bit stunned I've never seen photos of this crater before now and thanks Richard for the background. Hope you were able to transfer everything over from that old hard drive while it was working.

Awesome job with putting these shots together to create one really great image. The snow adds a nice touch to this as it highlights the cracks and crevices in the crater's walls. I'm amazed (based on your great description) at how deep this crater really is. What an impact that must have been and the devastation that followed would have been tremendous. Thanks for sharing this excellent photo and information!

Awesome photo! I've seen documentaries about Meteor Crater. I don't remember the old guys name who bought it in the early part of the century but he thought he would get rich digging for minerals and ore there. All they ever found were tiny pieces of pulverized meteor and the old man died destitute. Well at least he lived his dream!
