Hiboux: One of my four rescued friends
"If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other.
If you do not talk to them you will not know them, and what you do not know you will fear. Â What one fears one destroys."
--Chief Dan George (1899 - 1981)
The avatar I use is a photo of a kitten who adopted me last fall. She came to my door one night, hungry and cold and in need of shelter. I had already adopted a rescued dog and 2 fostered cats (I have a friend who works in animal rescue), but another friend told me that being chosen by a cat was a special thing, so, here she is in her new home. I called her Hiboux (French for owl for those who don't already know), since she reminded me of a snowy owl tapping on my door.
Sorry I need a new digital camera. The one used for this photo was one of the first ones ever made that utilizes a floppy disc. I am attached to it, but thought it was more important to show off my kitty here since this is merely my "home" page and not a display of my digital art. I'll update it as soon as I can.
I live in the US Midwest, have a degree in landscape design, compete nationally (only in the US so far)Â in dancesport, and choreographed contemporary dance for over a decade. I've been writing since childhood--mainly for my own amusement. A few of my poems have been published in obscure places and I used to write many interviews which were published online for years. None of my novels have met the public eye yet and that's OK because for me "the joy is in the journey." Â
I'm hooked on creating digital art. I stumbled upon it when I worked online for 11 years as a content editor and became intrigued watching the medium grow. 3D art feels like a good niche for me combining movement, landscape, my love of nature, history, art, technology, myth and storytelling . . .  I love to experiment with software and hope to continue to grow as an artist. I'm in awe of many of the beautiful works shared on this site. I've also begun a blog here called "A Novelist's Adventures in Digital Art" where I list useful sites and tools I find along the way:

Â
I consider myself a beginner at digital art. We all have to start somewhere. I try to encourage other creatives on all skill levels as often as I have time. I learn a lot from the artists I favorite here and even from private emails with tips if you feel so inclined. I dont allow ratings in my gallery anymore, because I don't believe in "grading" art--it doesn't fit into my personal philosophy. That said, I do often admire many of the talented professional artists and am happy when they are showcased on the art charts here and feel the rating system--though it has flaws--is important to honor excellence.  I do appreciate any comments and appreciate constructive criticism and suggestions.

Cathy I'm so very sorry about the problems with your hard drive and hope you can get back on track soon. The same thing has happened to me before and I know how you feel. This image is really great, and really one of your best. By the way you can get that info off the old hard drive for a minimal cost at most computer repair places.

Mmmmm what's on the cards today, Cathy? Nice work! I know you've been struggling with your equipment, but you still managed to pull out a great one - excellent composition. I like her expression... it's like "do I really see all this stuff or not?" Excellent background too for a lovely combination of tools. I see you have used the classic Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot pack and dealt the Four of Cups, the Queen of Wands and The High Priestess. Mmmmm... I'm predicting a new computer is just around the corner.

Great work, Cathy. Fantastic composition. Tarot cards, and a crystal ball.. She even have a Ouija-board, to contact the spirits. Cool detail. :) Maybe she can tell me about my destiny? #;o) Great background too.. fine VUE render. PS.. Hope the PC works out fine... i hate computer problems too.. Even if i earned a lot of money fixing computers once haha.. Maybe that's why i hate PC probs this day. #;oD Real women don't take backup's... they cry when they loose their content.;)+5

this is vivid and lovely... but the computer woes has me feelin for ya Cathy. Alot of the time if you just copy your software apps and finished art, and texture folders to a CD..you dont have to do a daily backup. At least thats what I do anyway.

Lovely and evocative picture. Sorry to hear about the loss of your harddrive. This happened to me back in March and I have yet to rebuild my entire runtime. You managed a great composition in spite of it all. This is great!

This is a great and original work. The witch appears somewhat lightened, as if she was somewhat phosphorescent, and this adds some magic to the image. Concerning your hard drive, I'm very sad about that but, unfortunately, disc drives are very sensible and unreliable devices. It's always necessary to have a full duplicate of your Documents folder (and all the applications' installers) because, even you have a very first disc marque such as Quantum, LaCie, Maxtor… they will crash one day or another. I suffered this kind of crash some years ago, my Documents disk was out in perhaps one hour, and very recently my daughter has a similar crash (and she has a laptop Mac, 200 or250 euros are asked for replacement). However, don't leave permanently the external disk connected to your computer, especially on PCs, because viruses can infect your safeguard disk too and destroy all the files… Save the new files, let me say, two times a week (depending of the number of files you create), don't replace the unchanged files because if some of them in the working disk have damaged themselves, you will replace the good ones of the saving disk by the bad ones:-((( 5+ of course!

I am going to get my desk top commputer from the shop - new motherboard. Was lucky tht they could back up the hard drive (paid in money not pain. I empathize with your crash. And - I think this is excellent work.

I know what you´ve been going through cause I´m suffering from the same problem right now. Anyhow, you´ve managed to create a very nice and inspiring image. Good luck!

Really sorry about what happened to your hard drive disk! It also happened to me earlier in Spring, a quite depressing moment to experience, but all things considered it dawned on me that I could live without a computer for three weeks and it was a good feeling to know it, altogether! Wonderful composition and render !
novelist
Wow, KarmaSong. Three weeks? That is so commendable! I am too addicted to the Web and all these new toys I've discovered. I think I'd need to go on a 12 step program if I was out of a computer for that long. : ) Thanks for all the support, my friends. This problem did create a new discovery for me. My pc is 7 years old and I realized it's time to look into a Mac.

I really like this image. Great composition.

LOL, you need to join WebAddicts Anonymous! Bet there will be soon! I sprung for an external hard drive to back up all my stuff. But of course I'm about three months behind on backing up files now. I'm guessing all is well now, as you are posting again. A marvlous image to come back with, and Kudos for learning to do your own texturing! You did a marvelous job on the shawl!
