Description

Hello dear friends, I hope you have had a good weekend! This pic here shows the inside of the dome of Havelberg. Standing inside is very impressive, believe me! The normal audience and the priests were divided by a chorus barrier, and the audience should not see (or disturb) the holy rituals. This chorus barrier, seen here in the middle of the picture, the so called "Lettner", is the most important treasure of this dome and one of the the finest and most important in Europe. It was constructed in 1396-1411 from sandstone and was paid by money that the bishops earned from pilgrims from the nearby situated village of Wilsnack. The Lettner demonstrates the importance of this bishop`s district till today. The triumph - cross group above was build in around 1270. Thanks for your interest. I hope you enjoyed this little excursion into history. This is the place where christian religion came from for places like Berlin, eastern Germany and Poland. Have a nice sunday evening wherever you are living, and a good start into the week. billcody, Berlin

I can just imagine the majesty of standing in the same location as you were Wolfgang, the high vaulted ceiling, the lettner(rood screen in English) and the very ornate pulpit. A very imposing building. Rood screens can be found in churches in many parts of Europe: the German word for one is Lettner; the French jubé; and the Dutch doksaal. However, in Catholic countries they have generally been removed, following the introduction of the Tridentine Mass at the Counter-reformation; and accordingly they survive in much greater numbers in Anglican and Lutheran churches. Information from:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rood_screen A very interesting read, well I thought so. Excellent capture. Bravo!!!!!

Very impressive archetecture and the capture illustrates well the knowledge of light and how it plays that has been at the core of the builders trade for a long time.
