Description

The Great Egret is a large bird with all white plumage that can reach 101 cm in height and weigh up to 950 g. It is only slightly smaller than the Great Blue or Grey Herons. Apart from size, the Great Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet. It also has a slow flight, with its neck retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes and spoonbills, which extend their necks. the smaller bird.I think is a The Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) is a small white heron. It is the American counterpart to the very similar Old World Little Egret, which has established a foothold in the Bahamas. Adults are typically 61 cm long and weigh 375 g. They have a slim black bill and long black legs with yellow feet. The area of the upper bill, in front of the eyes, is yellow but turns red during the breeding season, when the adults also gain recurved plumes on the back, making for a "shaggy" effect. The juvenile looks similar to the adult, but the base of the bill is paler, and a green or yellow line runs down the back of the legs. Wikipedia I took these yesterday with my 500mm lens thanks for viewing and any comments

I get to see a lot of these around the lake and pond. Neat birds and almost nothing to them but feathers. I have seen them perch on a willow limb that probably would not hold the weight of a squirrel. A great photo series!

The bottom shot, second from the right is a total hoot and got my attention before the others. :-) Its placement is perfect and it gives me a place to start looking at the rest. Great collage! Well done photos and presentation.

Fantastic captures, Richard. And very interesting information, goes with the pictures. Fascinating bird. A while back i read a lot about storks and herons. Because i always wondered, why they often stand on one leg for very long time. They even sleep, standing on one leg. This pretty Egret, looks to be part of the same family. I bet the Egret is a one leg sleeper too... It seems to have been a puzzle to science for a long time... Why they sleep and relax on one leg.. Only a lot of theory.. noone seems to know why. #:o) Most theory goes for gravity facts, regarding the way their body is built. A mystery to science. Wonderful post.

Richard, You might have ssen the blue heron I put up some time ago? well maybe I did hmm can't remember if it was here? However it was sitting on my nieces pool just resting lol:: I then looked it up when I got home from montreal and had a lot on these birds in a folder so here you go for those of you that are interested as I am : ** Similar Species Snowy Egret is smaller, has black bill, and yellow feet. Great White Heron, the white form of the Great Blue Heron, has a heavier bill, and pale, not black, legs. The white form of the Reddish Egret has a dark or bi-colored bill. The white juvenile of the Little Blue Heron has greenish legs, and a dark bill with a bluish base. Cattle Egret can have a yellow bill and black legs, but it is much shorter and stockier, and often has a reddish wash over the head, back, and chest. Sound A deep croak when disturbed. Other low calls around nest. THANKS RICHARD GREAT CAPTURE (evie shouts ))
