Description

Sahalie Falls is the first of three major waterfalls along the McKenzie River. This sheer plunge of 68 feet is broken into two segments when the river is running at its highest volume. Sahalie is by far the most famous of the large waterfalls along the McKenzie, as illustrated in the falls being used in the Disney movie Homeward Bound. Even though the McKenzie River originates in Clear Lake, just a few miles upstream, the river sustains a very significant volume all year long thanks to the large drainage area to the northeast which consists largely of plains of lava flows. Water doesn't linger on the surface and seeps underground, forming one of the larger aquifers in Oregon, then it all emerges in springs around Clear Lake. The result is one of the most consistent rivers in the northwest. This was the first waterfall we saw on our recent vacation. We spent over an hour taking pictures here and at the next waterfall a short walk downstream. It's a good thing I don't have to worry about buying film any more. LOL My gallery at Smugmug is slowly growing. Take a peek if you get a minute.

I love the way the water crisscrosses on itself at the top, then merges as it flows. That looks like amazing terrain. :)

Very nice, Dennis. I like the rock to the left of the falls, not to mention the pretty greenery and trees.
