Description
A shot of the Memphis Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, taken last December. Most local photographers like to shoot down there in the spring (myself included), but I also think the last minutes of direct sunlight's golden glow on a winter landscape work extremely well together.
Hard to believe, but back as recently as the 1930's Memphis garbage trucks used to back up to the edge of the bluffs and dump the city's garbage there, most of it rolling on down to the river! In addition to destroying any chance of a decent riverfront (think of the summertime smell) it must have caused quite a mess on the river all the way down to New Orleans.
Some overpaid city official of the time actually came up with that plan, and all the city brains of the day probably thought "what a great idea"! Fortunately developer's greed finally won out (a positive rarity for them), but the intellect of our local government unfortunately has not evolved one iota.

This dumping practice was pretty normal for that time and in some cases, it produced some very interesting things after the dumping stopped. Beach-goers often find history between their toes on shoreline walks. The lighting here is magical and you really did a great job on this.

I have a creek that runs thru my property and when we first moved there, you wouldn't believe what we pulled out of it. People have that "out of sight, out of mind" concept when it comes to garbage. Great color in this foto, the sun just warms everything up.
