Description

Mornin' All *S* Here's some info about today's post for those who are interested : Danse Macabre (French), Danza Macabra (Italian) or Totentanz (German), is a late-medieval allegory on the universality of death: no matter one's station in life, the dance of death unites all. La Danse Macabre consists of the personified death leading a row of dancing figures from all walks of life to the grave—typically with an emperor, king, youngster, beautiful girl, all skeletal. They were produced to remind people of how fragile their lives were and how vain the glories of earthly life were. According to the ancient superstition, "Death" appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death has the power to call forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle. His skeletons dance for him until the first break of dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year. Camille Saint-Saens (1835 - 1921) who is more well known for his "Carnival of Animals," also wrote a "Danse Macabre" piece, and as in his "Carnival" used a xylophone to symbolize the rattling of bones. Well, hope you enjoy my little version...sorry, no skeletons :o) ...y'all have a good one ! ~ Love & Hugs ~ * Mina * Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Credits: www.mjranum.deviantart.com www.annikavonholdt.com

Gorgeous interpretation, Mina. I love everything about it. Powerful art work. The Saint-Saens work has always been one of my favorites. I especially love playing his music this time of year. The theme is a good reminder for us all.

We are greater than death so it can only rinse itself in our bodies and never get clean from washing.

Very interesting back story to a very interesting theme and picture! I can almost picture a skeleton (Red?) looking a bit like Fred (Astaire) tap dancing in top hat and tails with cane on my grave! It would probably annoy me, but I would just roll over, stuff the headrest tighter to my ears and go back to sleep. :O)

What's surprising about this is that you have none of the characters usually associated with the Danse; instead you capture all of them in one reaching person; and she reaches (as some of your comments say) in pain and hope, as if defying the inevitability of death. You use images delicately here, your leaf and branch imagery, both of which whisper through the art; your architectural halls and facades, as if they were beyond time and this woman is reaching in some post-time world; the chess-board, reminding me of the film, The Seventh Seal, where one does see the dance of death at end and where we actually see death play chess with a knight...and a butterfly of transformation & hope. A deep reddish-amber palette of dreams and thresholds, and it's yet another treatment of literary and musical themes that you, seemingly effortlessly, translate into art. (I know it's not effortless, but you make it seem so, because your product is always organic). Yours is much more penetrating than the Saint-Seans, and it's done with love too. Beautiful.

This is a fantastic painting Mina. Her facial expression and body language artfully depict the struggle of those seeking to find their way to the peace of death. I see how she has her back to the light as she struggle vainly away from it's self-revealment. All is not yet lost for her though, as we see still, despite the craggy dead branches a few blooms still grow and of even more import; a butterfly -that most wonderful of creatures which demonstrates how a grubby thing can undergo a life-changing event in order to become something beautiful ... Thank you for this splendid imagery, painted with such richness of color and pose. Truly fabulous artwork! 10+
