Description

The giant turbines at England's largest onshore winfarm have finally begun turning. The controversial 'windmills' of the £50M(million UK Pounds) project on Scout Moor above Rochdale have already generated more than 4,000 megawatt hours of electricity. Developer Peel Energy has now turned on all 26 of the 325 feet(99.06 meters) high turbines. The farm will now generate enough power for the average needs of 40,000 homes a year, adding 65 megawatts to the National Grid via a new sub station near Ashworth Moor reservoir. The turbines have changed the landscape over a two mile stretch on the border of Rossendale and Rochdale and changed the face of Greater Manchester's contribution to reducing climate change The above information came from 'The Rochdale Observer'. Please zoom this image is large, 9 photographs have been stiched, before reducing the image it was 333mb. at first it would not save the jpeg image as there was not enough memory, I have 4gig of ram and a 650 gig hard drive plus three others smaller. Taken today at around 14:00 hrs, the moor was packed out as they were having an open day with a bbq. I couldn't get near to the site there was well over two hundred cars parked along the road. I went away from the site to be able to get these shots, I was about half of a mile away. If you zoom you may be able to see people snaking along pathways going up to the top of the moor. Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make. Ronnie, I was using that device I told you about, it should be OK with a bit more practice. Have a nice weekend.

There are several of these "farms" all over California and I am always amazed at how huge they are. When you see them from a distance, they look for all the world like some kind of prehistoric beasts---ZOOM is spectacular--great shots!!

I think people round here where we live Jeff would pay good money for this magnificent Pano you have created mate. I can't tell you how impressed I am by it. I would certainly be proud of taking this one myself. And a great write-up with credit to the Rochdale Observer, a very diplomatic and unbiased view I might add ! BRILLIANT!

Excellent capture and work Jeff.I agree with Danob it may be ugly for the eye but we must do something to stop the pollution. It is a pity that i am working at a coal fired power station.I am one that loves nature as you can see in my pictures that i capture.

And do you have the same problem we have? We have been shutting down a great many of ours because birds keep getting killed flying into them. I see this as one of the great, mostly untapped sources of power and I sure hope they get the bugs (or birds in some cases) worked out of them soon so we can test the true potential of wind power.

Great pano Jeff and great information. It really looks super in zoom. These windmills may have changed the landscape, but that doesn't bother me, just as it didn't bother me 40-50 years ago to see all the smoke-belching stacks. Windmills is one of the ways of the future. On several occassions when my brother Wolfgang and I drove through the countryside around Berlin, we noticed that there were many windmills on private farming property. Wolfgang explained to me that the farmer who has these energy producing mills on his property actually is making some money from it. Thanks for the kind comments on my recent illness. I was lucky that it was discovered early. The danger with cancer is that if it goes undetected it is often too late to cure once it has spread. I did not go and see Wolfgang, it is too expensive in Europe for me. I spent last Christmas with my cousin Gundi in Oberammergau when we went to Mt. Blanc and other places. Last time in Berlin with Wolfgang was in September 2006 when he and I went to see the new Hauptbahnhof, the marathon and went to the Spreewald.

Oh I missed this one! What an impressive image and great job stitching them all together! They have some rather large ones like this in Texas, as well. In a way they ruin the landscape, but in a way, it's better to think of better ways for our future like this right here.
