Description

I thought I'd share some further samples of my recent projects that seem to keep me so busy. Being the history/anthropology nerd I am, I had to invest alot of effort in the cultural/historical basis of the costumes I design for renaissance festivals, and my most recent project is intended to be a culture that isn't metal-using. Of course, what kind of warrior-costume could be complete unless there are weapons to be carried with it? I took some chipped pieces of flint and made molds for chipped-stone blades, you've already seen the claws, and I also sculpted a basic model for giant teeth. This shot is very much still in progress. The handles were a piece of tree limb with a very delightful texture to the surface. I painted the surface, then sanded off the ridges to get these contrasting light/dark areas. Varnishing lent the glossy surface coating, then I glued on the pieces and deerskin bands to help hold everything on. The teeth are part of a piece a friend requested, and still in progress. for this shot they haven't been glued on, yet, as I was still trying to finalize the design, somewhat. Thanks for taking a look. Maybe someday I'll actually finish this project!

These are very nice. I like taking anthopological descriptions of items made and then replicate it as close to the original as possible. I use the same methods used in pre-historical constructions. That is, no modern tools are used to make them and only natural materials, like bone and rock, are used. Glue and "paint" when called for, are made as them made them at the time. I have enjoyed making things from many different periods including spears and harpoons, pipes and totems. It's a great hobby! These are fine looking tools and a nice shot of them. Hope you finish them soon and enjoy them.
