Description

You must have heard of the latest interstellar crime-wave, the "Marie Celeste" scam. It involves a starship found drifting and seemingly abandoned, of course (and some of those earliest, pioneering starliners still do turn up as the genuine article, all these centuries later). How the scam develops from there tends to depend on the wit and sophistication of the criminal element, or maybe just on the kind of hardware they have access to. The authorities in some sectors have been successfully sued for boarding without due process, illegal arrest, restraint of trade and so on. You can clock up eye-watering damages for that kind of thing with a decent lawyer. The most popular version of the scam is the violent one, though, where the boarding party is overwhelmed and held to ransom, or even where the starship itself that has stopped to investigate the derelict is captured by the crew of the "Marie Celeste". Sensory enhancements are one of the weapons being deployed against this menace. Ariadne Jellicoe can't actually see through solid walls, as some breathless holocaps have claimed for the new breed of space-cops , but her vision does extend beyond the usual visible spectrum. Probably more useful in practice is the way in which her personal sensor suite is linked into her ocular implants. There is a pirate behind that bulkhead and he has no idea that Jellicoe has spotted him.
