Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera. hand-held image. This is the discarded husk of a Grasshopper after molting. The critter got too big for it's britches, lol. I am always amazed at how insects can crawl out of their skins. All the intricate humps and bumps of legs and other body parts must be withdrawn from a skin tight covering. The process is quite interesting. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

How weird :) Great shot. I have seen many empty skins around here lately... but I don't know what came out... LOL.

It is amazing as to how they keep the left overs intact so well. This is an amazing find and very beautiful!

Interesting, intriguing, mesmerizing, facinating, all of these at the same time. Where did it exit from? how can they do this? things like this always puzzle me Lee, like you say they have to get all the bumpy bits out and still they leave the empty carcase near enough intact. I know there body is pretty malleable when they do this, but it is still pretty mind blowing. I would love to have seen this one emerge. It has even left the tiny hairs on the legs behind. Fantastic capture, most people wouldn't give this a second glance, I'm so glad you found it. Thanks for sharing. Bravo!!!!!

I love this shell. And when I find them and other bug shells in my yard I always want to keep them forever so I can study them. No way, but I do wish I could. I have to say, you finally got to me. I found this stuff rolled in a rose leaf last night and decided to clip the leaf off, put it in a jar and see what came out of it. I'll probably be sorry...it'll be some horde of mini-attack spiders or something, but what the heck...maybe it'll teach me something. LOL
