Should View Full Size!!
This guy looked like he was on verge of attack but I just had to grap a couple of shots. It is some sort of paper wasp (not a little one).
There are different species of Paper Wasps. Those Polistes wasps which build the inverted mushroom-shaped nest near buildings in Brisbane are either Polistes humilis, P. tepidus, P. variabilis or P. townsvillensis. They are dark brown in colour with yellow bends on dark brown abdomen. The thorax is black in colour with yellow 'V' markings. Their faces are yellow with large compound eyes.
Paper Wasps build wide cone shape nest hanging with single stalk. They are social wasps living in colonies in a nest built of "paper". Those nest building materials are chewed plant materials such as decayed timber, mixed with their saliva. They will attack and sting if their nest are disturbed.
Thanx for dropping in and your comments & favs on my last upload. Oh by the way the "little dancer" is growwing into a stink bug I think.

Great close-up, Ralph. Don't believe I'd get this close without a can of bug killer.

Excellent image. The clarity and details are great. I am not fond of social wasps for the obvious reasons, they are pretty aggressive and they attack in numbers, lol. Despite that, I do see the beauty in their design and social skills. BTW - I did a little research on your "Little Dancer" but my belief that it might be an Ambush bug was apparently totally wrong. From what I found out, Australia has no Ambush Bug species. I then decided it might be a Coreid Bug, which is also a True Bug (as are Stink Bugs) but I could find nothing to confirm that. You could try to post the image at Whatsthatbug.com - it is a nice site that accepts insect images from all over the world, but it could take quite some time before someone ventures any info. Please keep us informed on any future results with getting an ID. Thanks for sharing. Lee
