Description
Pu'ukohola Heiau built by King Kamehameha the Great between 1790 and 1791 was constructed for ceremonies related to war. It was built to gain the favor of the war god Kuka'ilimoku. Heiau (temples) were places of worship that were central to Hawaiian religious beliefs. From the heiau, the kahuna (priest) communicated with the gods and advised the ali'i (chief). Questioning a kahuna on how best to go about securing the rest of the island, Kamehameha resolved to construct this heiau, and to lay an aliʻi's (chief) body on it. When the temple was completed, Kamehameha had invited chief Keoua. Keoua was to be sacrificed. Many heiau once existed throughout the Hawaiian Islands, but their use ceased with the destruction of the kapu (taboo) system in 1819. Aloha and thank you for viewing
