Description

Well, I know what the aircraft was used for: training for A6 Intruder aircrew. What the airframe that got the nose job is, I don't know. The quality of the photo ain't great (you should have seen it before I cleaned it up), but the subject is unusual. Taken at CFB Shearwater sometime after '85, or else taken at NAS Oceana around 1994. I've never been good at making notes.

Interesting. I'd like to know the story behind it though.

The aircraft is a Grumman Gulfstream G-1. The nose might be an electronic/surveillance package possibly used for Prowler training.

Certainly shares some chracteristics of an electronics package has been tacked on the nose.

interesting pic, seems strange to use a piston engined a/c in this way. (during the testing of the Sea Harrier radar, the RN stuck a Sea Harrier radome on a 2-seat Hunter, it looked rather handsome).

Well, it's definitely an A6 nose on the plane, explained by the Intruder training.

Skipper62 ventured that this is a Navy TC-4 by Grumman. I googled TC-4 and found this configuration in an image and labeled Grumman TC-4C VA-128 US Navy. Anyone interested...take a look. Bill

Cool trainer and a good ground shot. The rosity air and ground crew are the guys to get the job done.

Great capture!I thought it looks like an A-6 nose. I am an Air Force guy but the A-6 came to DaNang in 1967 flown by the Marines. Also saw what happened when a A-6 plowed into a C-141 during take-off at night (everything was blacked out due the possibily of a rocket attack). The A-6 crew ejected, everyone on the C-141 perished when it blew up. It had carried about 40,000 lbs of explosives on board. This was told to me when I returned to DaNang, so I didn't personally witniss it, but according to the guys that were there, everybody hit the bunker, they thought it was a rocked attack. What I saw was the tail of the C-141, that was all that was left. When I told this story to one of our young guys at the 161 ARW Life Support Shop he told me that one of his instructors at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona was one of the two guys that had ejected from the A-6.
