Description

Hello everyone :o) I went for a drive earlier in the week ,by myself out into the countryside .Trying hard to forget my woes i took my camera just on the off chance I might come across something worth taking .I ended up about 25 miles from home at a small village named Piercebridge .I remember this place from my childhood as I had an uncle who lived here .It took forever to get here on the bus back in th 60`s :o)..Anyway the river Tees runs through here and its very picturesque and although i dont remember from my childhood ,there is also a Roman ruin .To be more precise its a fort ,but there is`nt much left of it ,albeit well preserved .The fort itself was built around 260-270AD and was maintained from c.290-350AD, with some later development. The fort appears to have followed the standard Roman plan, being rectangular in shape with towers at each corner. In the centre of each elevation of perimeter wall would have been a substantial gate through two of which Dere Street would have probably passed. Internally Piercebridge Fort would have comprised of several barracks blocks, granaries, workshops, the headquarters building, and the commandant's house. The church is the same one as in yesterdays pic and the shot was taken facing north. I am slowly getting caught up and it appears I`ve missed some cracking pics this last week .I will try and comment on as many as I can .Thanks for looking and take care :o) Mick

Very interesting indeed! And those folk who live there are safe from it being built over!

Fascinating that it lays bare like that for the elements to continue to claim. I suppose there isn't much else to be done, although, there is a ruin I once went to where they built a protective cover over it so it was at least somewhat protected from sun, wind and rain. Very interesting shot here.

Superb pic Mick and it's always nice to get away to get a new perspective on everything. This is fascinating as I am a HUGE fan of ruins of every type from every culture and would love to see more if you have them.

Beautiful shot mate, I will have to take a run out one day, I seem to be stuck in local areas, except for the five mile journey to my work, which is by underground, hope you hear about a move soon mate, you are in my thoughts.

I'm sorry things are in such a state that you had to take to the road to escape, but as long as you needed to get out ... I'm glad you took your camera! Wonderful capture.

Nothing like a drive out in the country to blow away a few cobwebs mate, you need a bit of me time, away from all the hassle now and again. I can't do much for your problems Mick I wish I could, it seems to be taking that long your house is going to get grade 2 listed if it goes on much longer. Then just like these Roman ruins it will have to be kept has part of the English heritage. Excellent capture thanks for the history of this place. Bravo!!!!!

This is a wonderful picture of a piece of history Mick and I like your historic information. And I am very glad to hear from you. I enjoy yours, as well as Alan's and Jeff's uploads, that allow me a glimpse of British history and geography. I started to upload pictures on this website after I retired, partly to keep myself occupied. I keep forgetting that other members of this community are still working, have families, children and grand children that demand some of their attention. I don't think I would have had the time to do this while I was working. Anyway, glad to hear from you, Sig...
