Dans le domaine du nucléaire, une réaction en chaîne se produit lorsqu'un neutron cause la fission d'un atome fissile produisant un plus grand nombre de neutrons qui à leur tour causent d'autres fissions. Une réaction en chaîne non contrôlée, qui se produit avec une quantité suffisamment importante de combustible fissile (masse critique) peut mener à une explosion d'énergie (voir l'image ci-dessus), c'est le principe d'une bombe atomique. La réaction en chaîne peut aussi être contrôlée et utilisée dans un réacteur nucléaire pour produire de l'énergie. Lors d'une réaction de fission nucléaire, l'absorption d'un neutron par un noyau fissile permet la libération de plusieurs neutrons. Chaque neutron émis peut à son tour casser un autre noyau fissile et la réaction se poursuit ainsi, d'elle-même. Cette réaction en chaîne n'a lieu que si au moins un neutron émis lors d'une fission est apte à provoquer une nouvelle fission. In the field of the nuclear power, a chain reaction occurs when a neutron causes fission of a fissile atom producing a greater number of neutrons which in their turn cause of other fissions. A not controlled chain reaction, which occurs with a sufficiently large quantity of fissile fuel (critical mass) can lead to an explosion of energy( see picture above), it is the principle of an atomic bomb. The chain reaction can also be controlled and used in a nuclear reactor to produce the energy. At the time of a reaction of nuclear fission, the absorption of a neutron by a fissile core allows the release of several neutrons. Each emitted neutron can in its turn break another fissile core and the reaction continues thus, of itself. This chain reaction don't place has that so at least a neutron emitted at the time of a fission is ready to cause a new fission.
