Description

My dear Liébo; Since we went to the castle to watch the approach of the Autumnal Omen, I've felt a hollow ache gnawing my ribs. It is normal, I suppose, that I would miss our old fraternal affections. It seems that a whole age has passed since you left. I am sure that neither of us are the same people. We are brothers, yes, but there is a change. I suppose that you'd been changing since before you left for your studies, but there is still a part of me that understands you, and I hope that there is something in you that understands me, still. As you know, Mother says that the city will be a ship-wreck for you. She sees ill omens (of the non-meteorological sort) almost every day. Since you stepped onto the train with our memento-trinkets hastily pressed into your hands, Mother has fallen prey to flares of mind-shattering worry and depression. She is afraid for you. I tell you this, not to trouble you, and please, Liébichko, forgive me if I do. I'm writing to you because we aren't the only ones changing. Your studies are important, and speaking for myself, I'm proud that I can tell my friends that my brother will be an aeromancer, and will spot Omens from the balconies of one castle or another. You're the bright light in our family, and I'm sending these words to you for that reason. I know that things must be harder in Ħradlinsk, and I can't imagine how life must be there, but I'm proud of you. Everyone is. Things here are as they'll always be. It is cold. The trees are yellow and orange, orange and red. The river is full of fishermen, and work at the factory is boring as usual. I see Jāolyn regularly. He sends his regards. Mother sends her love, though I'm sure that mine isn't the only letter you've received. There isn't much more to say, and so I will stop. I'm not so accustomed to writing letters, but I'll get better. I look forward to the day you return home for Break. I'll be proud to drink with the man you're becoming, and I'll be equally proud to call him my brother! You'll have to tell me everything about your studies and about Ħradlinsk. I look forward to every moment of that. With love, your brother, Líesh **** The old mailbox in the image accompanying this text is one of the pieces of Český Krumlov history, in a sense. It is mounted on the door of a crumbling mound of a building...probably the unused, rear sections of the Eggenberg brewery. During the Communist Era, Český Krumlov fell into extreme disrepair. Renovation is an every day element of life, especially in the old center, but in many ways, there's still a long way to go. **** As always, thank you for viewing and reading, and hopefully you've enjoyed this dip into an alternate world. On another note, I hope your Halloween is going well!

Brilliant letter, I look forward the brother's answer... Could he be picking his mail in such an old and rusty mailbox? Cool picture, and an amazing sense of rythm in your writing... One sentence, and we get INSIDE of it... A pretty rare gift, Chip :)

we also have a few mailboxes like this still hanging around on downtown side street buildings with probably the very same letters but in a different language....sad and touching! great photograph.

This made me think of my days as a letter carrier; I saw LOTS of mailboxes just like these!! Besides that rather off the wall memory, I love this. Letters in the mail are becoming a lost art; there's still nothing like opening your own mailbox and finding some little piece of mail from someone who took the time to send it. And this one tells of a very special bond, actually several special bonds. Wow, you're getting to me, Chip, I'm going off in all directions here trying to tell you why I like this so much!!

As you know Chip, I live and breathe Castle history - in fact I live in one (figuratively speaking) most of the time. This letter excerpt is excellent, riveting and the image an excellent accompaniment. Dave

OK, now I want to know about this training to be an aeromancer..... what an intriguing story, as always. Maybe you should put on a long robe and travel around door to door reviving the occupation of the bard... :) Awesome work!

If you expanded this into a multi-part story, I promise I would read every word, and wait breathlessly for the next installment.

A most beautiful, heart-felt letter that is masterful in it's expression and feeling. The very style of the narrative is most appealing; and certainly reminds me of the era in which it speaks through. The image, in addition, seems to peak my curiosity further though, as the rust leads one to believe there is far more history than one might pre-suppose. Lovely capture, and a great find indeed!

Very interesting textures. As a working mail box, I'd want to sand and re-surface it. As a piece of found art, it's worth viewing.

Excellent visual choice to punctuate this part of the story. There's a strange sense or determination to endure here.

Your writing talent again amazes me. With a few words you take me into the story and into the life of Líesh. Already I'm under the impression to know him and his life. The old mailbox is a perfect match to the letter. It shows how it is where they come from and although nothing of Ħradlinsk is mentioned I can see the difference.
