Description

Found these small flies (about 4-5mm) all over a plant this morn on my wetlands walk after a light rain. Several of them were doing this common fly practice of blowing bubbles. I have only captured it once before, but not this clear. I have read that it is not totally understood why they do this, but some think it has to do with digestion. I did notice that this fly would walk around the flower, licking up pollen, then sit still for a few seconds and blow a bubble, then slowly suck it back in. Then back to licking up the pollen-repeat... ;-) Thanks for taking a look and any comments you leave. Have a good and safe Halloween all... -bruce

I never knew that flies (or rather, some of them) can actually blow bubbles. Not the kind of thing you'd expect. I too would think it has something to dow ith digestion - some flies regurgitate bile on what they're eating to aid digestion. Maybe others need to blow bubbles first?

Amazing capture, it looks (to me) like he/she is playing with bubble gum or something. Might just be the frame of mind that I'm in at the moment though ;-)
