Description

Most residents of the USA know the name Leavenworth and associate it with this 105 year old building. This is United States Penitentiary (USP), Leavenworth. It was a maximum security prison from 1903 to 2005. Today it is classified as Medium Security. I pass by this 1,583 acre facility numerous times each day without ever paying much attention to it. Since I've been on the hunt for fall colors, I reopened my eyes and took a fresh look at our local landmark. And what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a rather pleasant looking place from the outside. What do you think? Best viewed full-size. Wikipedia has a list of "Notable Prisoners" who have made USP, Leavenworth their home...here's just a few: * George "Bugs" Moran, Irish gangster that battled Al Capone for control of Chicago's criminal underworld. * Fritz Joubert Duquesne, Nazi spy and leader of the Duquesne Spy Ring. * George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Depression era gangster who supposedly could write his name on a wall using a machinegun. * Robert Stroud, became famous as the "Bird Man of Alcatraz". * Michael Vick, NFL quarterback for the Atlanta Facons... An interesting piece of architecture. It was designed and built in a very grand style to present a psychologically imposing structure to all who enter. Comments always appreciated. Bill

If I passed this as a tourist Bill I wouldn't have even thought it to be a prison, a glorious looking building. Our prison here is concrete, concrete, and yes concrete! It is based far out of town. I was amazed when I went to Cardiff in Wales in the summer, the prison there is bang right in the middle of a very busy town! Superb capture and narrative.

Excellent capture of this historic prison and grounds. I can think of a few individuals who should be housed here!!!

I have to agree, i've heard of Leavenworth but never seen a picture of it. It looks like a city hall from the outside. An eyeopening post bill.

Wonderful capture. Is this where you housed our notorious Colonel friend and tour walker when he was out working for you? Skipper62

It be a bit psychologically imposed!!! It's certainly big. An epic shot when opened up and the notes fill out the history well. Thanks for that! Great job, mate! rob.

Solid, squared angles, it exudes rectitude. But my first reaction to the pic was, "Is this all?" Then I saw the buildings to the left. Am surprised they sent Michael Vick here. Had thought he would have been at some low security "country club." Great image.

Stellar capture of a most famous, or infamous, institution of incarceration. If I didn't know better, I would say this was a State capitol building or a huge library. The list of past and present guests is most impressive. I always get a kick out of their nicknames.

It does look nice from the outside but I wouldn't want to be inside. Its reputation has even spread to down here, mainly through films and documentaries.

The grounds are well kept and it looks beautiful....but I wonder what the inside looks like...would you believe this is the first picture I've ever seen of it? I expected to see some worn down building so I was pleasantly surprised.

So that's the infamous Leavenworth! How neat! Very interesting narrative and it does look imposing but, as said, more like a museum. Thanks for sharing this.
