Description

In Italy, Nov 2 lies the commemoration of the dead. It's the day when you go to the cemetery to lay flowers, preferably chrysanthemums, on the graves of our loved ones! In Sicily, this day was called "The Feast of the Dead." When I was a little girl... centuries ago... Nov 1 we went to bed early to make sure that our "dead" hide toys... dawn of 2, all children went in search of toys and sweetmeat... when they found, it was a feast! Then we went with the parents to the cemetery to thank the dead for their gifts... this was a way of getting kids to understand that we are not afraid of death and to respect the dead! Now this "feast" is no longer in use, it was supplanted by Halloween that is taking over not only in Sicily but also throughout Italy! Have a great Sunday! :)

in the Philippines the people take food to the graveyard for their deceased relatives.I was there once during the ceremony and was invited.I declined as I wanted no part in fighting the 1000's of mosquitos. I went once during daylight and they were like a first line assault I enjoy learning about other cultures.thanks for the story and marvelous flowers

There are so many ways to learn not to fear death and in many ways, Halloween is the same thing. I do like the respect of your celebration and feel bad the holiday is changing for you. It is important to preserve tradition. Great shot of these flowers.

Beautiful image and postwork, Maria. Sound like a sane tradition to me. To make people get a natural relationship to death. I'm glad though, that we don't have that tradition in Denmark. I could not affort so many flowers. #;o). I have more graves to maintain, than people have fingers.#:o|+5
