Description

This is a detail from my post of yesterday. The main reason i started this painting was to try and master the technique used by Rembrandt, so the colours and some details may differ... I have not had the privelage of seeing the original of this painting and my reference source was a library book. The painting is blocked in with areas of dark and light shading, the choice of colour in this blocking process will effect the outcome as they will 'glow' through from below. This is allowed to dry. I then 'glaze' (mix the oil paint with either glazing medium or the best quality genuine turpentine... NOT ordinary turps)This thin transparent mixture is then painted over the underpainting and allowed to dry (never use wet-on-wet with this method). This is repeated scores of times, maybe hundreds, building up layer upon layer, changing the hues to help transition the shades and to slowly add features such as eyes, nose and mouth. The final painting is given coats of artists varnish. Enjoyable, but it is a long process. Zoom in to see glaze

It's very good actually. Works better than the whole! (Sorry!) Good one, Rob.

Bravo for the work - such a tricky technique to come to terms with [underpainting and thin layers], I have to look at your previous post. Well done.

Yep! That's Chiarroscuro buddy... And to think that they didn't have these exotic mixtures and varnishes of today... Simply egg-yolks drying up in moments P
