Description
The day's clarity was an ephemeral thing. Morning saw the arrival of fog. Afternoon wore a blanket of clouds, and it was not until sunset that the blanket tore and light spilled through in all of the shades of peach and salmon, salmon and pink. A ragged smear of blue darkened the eastern sky.
It was in the brief flare of sunset that I went for a walk with a local friend. We'd met, nights before, in a bar with blissful drunks asleep on the benches, or curled into corners. One slept in a lumpy huddle, bare inches from the nose of his obedient dog.
We'd seen each other as I purchased bread, pasta, and yogurt from the small store just outside the castle gates.
Now, days later, we ambled along Pivovarska: a street named for the hulking, half-crumbling brewery that stood like an angular, stone amoeba along the bank of the Vltava. I carried a borrowed camera. There was smoke in the air—exhalations from chimneys and not our lungs, though we smoked like immortals.
We walked with no destination in mind.
We spoke of nothing in particular.
Maple trees surrounded us, their yellowed leaves fluttering to the ground like the abandoned wings of strange butterflies.
