Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera, hand-held image. This is the 3rd and last wasp in this 3 part series. It is also known as a Scarab-hunter Wasp. The female flies close to the ground in figure 8 patterns to locate her prey (the grubs of Scarab Beetles). She will dig down and paralyze the grub then deposit an egg on or near it before reburying both. The adults feed on nectar. This is my first capture of this species. I was struck by the hairiness of it and by the mouth parts. This image does show it but not well. This feeding part is a rather large tubular scoop and it is pretty obvious. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

Nothing else to be said really, I echo all the above, it is the first time I have seen any wasp as hairy as this one is. A great help in collecting pollen but it sounds like it does not live in a nest so pollen would not be collected. An intruging shot Lee I thionk some searching on this critter is next for me. Excellent capture superb clarity and detail, thanks for sharing. Bravo!!!!!
