I walk past the graves of the Spanish-American War dead on crooks road. The captions are intriguing. Must have been sons of wealthy local people.

The Olympia...famous flagship of Commodore George Dewey. May 10, 1898 Dewey's fleet sank the entire Spanish fleet in the Battle of Manila Bay. Dewey's famous statement at the opening of the battle was uttered to the captain of the Olympia, "Gridley, You may fire when ready". Thanks for bringing this old warhorse (can you call a ship that?) back as a reminder and tribute to veterans of the past. Got any more pictures of this grand old ship? Bill

I forgot to mention that today is the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I. Originally called "Armistice Day" here in the USA, it marks when World War I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. The problem comes in with the word "ended." The Great War and its flawed Treaty of Versailles shaped the rest of the century. Think of the Soviet Union, World War II, the creation of eastern European states, and the subsequent split of Yugoslavia. Much to think about today.

A thank you is all I have. I'm grateful that I live the way I do because others paid the price. I will never forget that!
