Description

Though the sun was well-risen, the day was cool. I walked, with a fellow traveler—a Russian who'd made a journey opposite my own planned odyssey. He left the land I seek to visit, and as fate would have it, we met in Prague. We'd had cheese cake for breakfast, and were soon to drink beer with lunch. But before that happened, we walked through the region of Vyšehrad and marveled at how the area resembled a strange amalgam of worlds. We walked through a park, beneath the infamous suicide bridge, and saw ruins of Communist Era buildings that looked a lot like cast-asides from the 25th century as occupied by Buck Rogers. How odd it is to walk through the present, only to feel that the future—a future—crumbles to dust around you. It was here that I saw the slugs. There were half a dozen of them and possibly more. As a child, I'd catch slugs from my mother's garden and keep them in jars filled with the makings of a perfect, miniature environment. I caught woodlice and millipedes as well. My bedroom was the strangest of bestiaries. The micro-environments are gone now, their residents are long dead. But as I walked through a park in Prague, I saw slugs. I've fallen in love with Prague, and will always appreciate it, even when I am no longer within the borders of the Czech Republic. The architecture is brilliant (if a bit heavy at times.) The people are—well...they're like people anywhere; some are my friends, some are not. Most importantly, there are slugs in Prague...and woodlice. They exist the world over, though perhaps not in deserts. That doesn't matter, however. In walking with a friend, I saw slugs—big, slow-moving vegetarians. I spent long moments with them. And afterward, with a friend I will see again, I drank beer and spoke of life in Moscow. There are slugs in Russia...and just as I've photographed one in the Czech Republic, I hope to photograph many more... ...there...in the company of someone infinitely special to me.... **** As always, thank you for viewing and reading, and commenting. Hopefully everyone is on the verge of a great weekend.

Cheesecake for breakfast... My kind of breakfast! I am not much of a fan of slugs... they are kinda creepy and slimey looky and freak me out a bit. LOL. I have the shivers right now and my tummy is turning... why that is? who knows? But, in spite of that, you have taken a nice photo of this fellow and I have enjoyed your writing (as usual),. Thanks for sharing. I hope you are on the verge of a fabulous and happy weekend~ Take care my friend. ~Melinda~

These things eat my marigolds every year. I'm resigned to putting marigolds in pots, now, away from the ground area. Really enjoyed your narrative and it looks like your journey to Russia is about to begin. Hope all is well and safe journey.

Wonderful shine and texture on the body; in the right light it could look like the carapace of a spaceship... I've always found them vaguely disturbing, like half-formed inappropriate sexual thoughts. OK, now I've said too much! Anyway, at one point my garden was inundated with them and I decided to give them flying lessons whenever I got the chance. Somehow I don't think slug aviation will ever take off...

I, too, have engaged in teaching slugs to fly. My friend, if you ever get to this part of the world, you will be in slug heaven. If slugs are poetry to you, the world would be three feet deep in words were you here.

Very interesting and engaging how you brought slugs into old memories and new. It is quite intriguing how much of the same world we all share. CC

Slugs (are not a favorite creature of mine)tho they are amazing....I remember in Bio class how the teacher demonstrated how a slug could go over a razor blade and not get hurt.....ohhhh to be a slug to be able to glide over possible hazards and danger that life throws in our path and remain unscathed....however thinking on it....we all have different fears different hazards....the slug might be able to glide over a razor blade that would cut me to the bone....but salt would reduce him to goo....Now that you have me thinking about slugs what to they bring to the grand eco scheme of things?...what positive to they bring to the table?....HAHA I talk silliness......they are kinda cool looking... tho I would never touch one....and gotta say I don't remember the slugs of my childhood in Illinois to have that texture....are there different types of slugs....hmmmm guess I have some goggling to do.
