Description

Life, like art is filled with genres and those strange, liminal spaces between them. There is light, and darkness, and then there is the interesting stuff between them—the constant byplay of the two. It is a kind of dance, and it is what interests me the most. Prague, like life, is filled with those in-between places: courtyards and passages like angular worm tunnels burrowed between buildings or beneath them. The architectural structure of Prague is a strange hodgepodge as well...it isn't impossible to find the entrance of one building carved into the face of its neighbor. In Prague, in Moscow, and other cities that occupy the Eastern and Central stretches of Europe, you climb a flight of stairs before reaching the first floor: in elevators, ground floors are designated by a zero. In Prague, Moscow, and similar cities, you enter courtyards before entering your destination...and the tunneled passage here is one such way in—or way out. Life takes on a certain, surreal quality when you have to go through half-barriers and strange switchbacks in order to get where you're going. But once you learn this method of urban navigation, you begin to see that so much of life—outside of urban planning—works in exactly the same, strangely counter-intuitive way. I guess that's why I love the passages in Central and Eastern Europe. Though they are daunting at times, they teach you how to dance through life, how to take unmarked shortcuts and ill-defined paths...or how to get to your destination by going through another one. **** Ah...the weekend is here, though for me, it's just another day...oh well. Good is good, and hopefully everyoe is at the start of a great weekend beginning. And, as always, thank you for reading, commenting, and viewing.

Good is good-- I like that line a lot!! I also love this foto and what it represents, that there are lots more way to get from point A to point B than a straight line. And often, they're LOTS more interesting, as is life!!

This is great, Chip! I love these hallways, these entrance tunnels into... whatever. You are right middle europe is filled with them and they are a major part in the attractiveness of Prague, Vienna, you name it.

I also love these mysterious passageways; they give you time to imagine your destination before you actually get there. This is a marvelous image, the darkness holding back before the light...great work!

There is light, after all, at the end of the tunnel. Cool capture and interesting narrative, Chip.

This makes me wonder about culture ... differences and similarities in thought, in perception. In my part of the world everything is relatively new, square, straightforward, linear. Architecture, walkways, hold no mystery, no surprises. A bedroom community, with a huge mall as centerpiece and raison d'etat, all straight lines and economics ... it's such a young and soul-less place. Stark contrast to your courtyards and passageways, halls and gates and intuitive architecture ... with soul and mystery and secrets to spare. There are times when I envy you Prague, my friend.

Ah in those old houses, you have those entrees and even there are differences in the countries, like the concierge in France, this tells so much if you have time to see and feel and ponder... like you do

long hall way to the light at the door....the light thru the door being the only lunmination brings a cheerfulness to the dark...shots like these always give me the "light at the end of the tunnel" feel.....a feeling of better days...of good changes....no reason to fear the dark....lovely!
