Description

Laupahoehoe Harbor. At one time there was a small school and community behind this little boat harbor. It was April 1, 1946 when a large earthquake was generated from the Aleutian Islands measuring about 8.2 on the Richter scale sending its powerful waves or Tsunami towards the Hawaiian Island. There were no warning system set up in those days. The first waves came pounding in about 7 am. When the water receded, no one knew what was happening. When it happened, it was to late. School and homes destroyed......23 students, four teachers and many residents lost their lives. Who would have expected a Tsunami on April 1st day. For some of us, how lucky we are to have made it to this time. Wishing all to be safe, healthy and have a Happy Thanksgiving. Aloha and thank you for viewing

Happy Thanksgiving! I feel very fortunate, too, that we have a digital system that lets us share so much now, such as this excellent image and local story.

Looking at it, I can't imagine such tragedy here. It is the sort of place you just feel like ought to be enjoyed. I do like the way it seems to call to the heart.

What tragedy... is always painful to talk about the destruction of houses and the loss of people, even if this happened many years ago! The place, however, is wonderful!

Great thought for Thanksgiving...we are all very fortunate. It is fun to sit down and write out a list of all the things we have to be thankful for...just in the last year. It is easy to be optimistic after doing this. Bill
