Description

The BAe AV-8B Harrier II is a British designed aircraft built by McDonnell Douglas. It is a V/STOL (Vertical/Short Takeoff and Landing) jet. It achieves this by thrust vectoring. In the United States it is used by the U.S. Marine Corps. This Harrier is about to take off vertically. This picture was taken in Midland, Texas in September 1998 and later scanned. Amazing concept--I just saw one of those huge C-something cargo planes today, I heard it before I saw it, looked up and there it was. Just after takeoff, and right overhead--aviation still seems like a miracle sometimes!!

We call it the Harrier Jump Jet in the UK Sig, it jumps up and takes off, #;0) An airplane that acts like a helicopter at times, a pretty fantastic machine and its been around for quite a while now. A concept forst born in the mid 50's and still going strong today. This magical machine has its very own web site here with a well documented history:- http://www.harrier.org.uk/ Excellent capture. Bravo!!!!!

Great capture! Great plane! I live at Stamford, a mile from RAF Wittering. That's where a lot of the UK Harriers are based or train. Most days you see them. Very cool and dangerous aircraft! Check it's Falkland record! None shot done.. Rob.

Good shot here Sig...Have you noticed what I am standing next to on my homepage? The Marines were bringing two of them to the annual airshow in Kansas City until three years ago when one took off from a Taxiway against the directions from the tower...result...a severely damaged taxiway. But that aside...this is a great aircraft. Bill
