Description
Morning all :o)
Dedicated to my friends :o)
This Xmas Cactus is growing in Jenny`s (my mum in law) front room alongside another which is a different colour .Jenny was passed on these 2 plants from my gran when she passed away 14 years ago now .Apart from re-potting every now and then they need no real looking after and they flower profusely every year from november to march .These plants always amaze me with their intense colours and vibrancy :o)
Some info
The Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera) is originally from the jungles of South America where it grows in trees. The roots settle within the bark and the plant lives off whatever nutrients and rainfall make their way through the canopy. This plant is a short day flower plant which basically means it flowers when the days become shorter. This is a non prickly cactus and it also doesn't have any leaves! Apparently the green you see is actually stem growth. In most cacti the leaves have evolved into spines and as this doesn't have spines - it doesn't have leaves either.
Thanks for looking and take care
Mick

I am amazed how long they live Mick, I had one in the early 80's which was left in a flat I took over from a friend, I had it for 3 years and left it for the next person. I hope they looked after it too! Excellent shot Mick
