Description

A friend of mine had bought a Sacred Pipe at a trading post in New Hope, PA. It turned out that the pipe was made by a Tuscarora Native. I smiled not saying a word (I am Mohawk on my father's side and Iroquois on my mothers)as I knew the story of the Tuscarora. Later at a Pow Wow my friend was searching for a pipe bag. He didn't care for the traditional beaded vertical bags. He wanted something different. I led him to a vendor with whom I'd bought skins from. Already I had in my minds eye exactly what the bag should look like. While I was looking at some skins to make the bag as a surpise,he had asked the vendor if she knew of anyone who could and how much it would cost to make a bag for him. Adding who the maker of the pipe was. What he didn't know was that I knew this woman from previous Pow Wow's and had bought many skins from her to make my ceremonial dress. She then leaned into him and told him "your standing next to the maker of your bag." So much for the surprise LOL!! The entire bag and pouches were designed by me and sewn by hand, as was the bead work sewn directly onto the skin. Fastening and decorative work is done of duck feathers, bone, amber gem stone, buffalo horn tips and turqoise. All the beading is done of gem stone and glass beads. Top and bottom: front and back view of Sacred Pipe bag Center Left: front and back view of the sacred bowl pouch. The bead work is a replica of the Tree of Life wampum belt. The Tree of Life represents the Five original Nations,Iroquois, Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, and Cayugas. The Tuscarora later making Six. Center right: Tobacco pouch The bead work is representative of Turtle Island and my clan. The center of its back is the medicine wheel with turqoise representing Father Sky and Jade representing Mother Earth.

I love the story of the creation of the earth and the turtle! One of my favorite even though I am Blackfoot on my father's side. It's a magical story. These are beautiful pouches. I made my own woman's medicine pipe years ago in the traditional manner with glowing embers to hollow the stem and the bowl made from deer antler. It has a natural imprint of a rabbit's footprint on it (what a lucky symbol!) and I have it decorated with a bobcat tail and quail feathers. I have not made a pouch for it yet but I do keep it away from anyone's touch in a cabinet with my special tobacco near. I hadn't thought about it until now, but I did make a medicine bag to wear around my neck out of a deer scrotum. Since I have not used it yet, I could use that for the tobacco and I'm now inspired to look through my hides to make a medicine pouch for the pipe. I tan my own hides so I have a few nice ones to choose from. Maybe some rabbit to go with the symbol on the pipe stem. :-)You are very talented and your beading is excellent!
