Description

This is part of the south face of Annapurna 1, shot at an altitude of 4200 metres at Annapurna base camp in the Nepalise Himalayas. At the bottom of the photo is a massive glacier which eventually feeds into the South Annapurna glacier that flows down the valley beside the base camp. Annapurna 1 is the tenth highest peak in the world at 8091 metres in height and is one of the fourteen 'eight thousanders' (Mountains above 8000 metres which include Everest) and the biggest mountain near the base camp. Annapurna 1 was the first 8000 meter peak to be climbed. Maurice Herzog & Louis Lachenal reached the summit on 3 June 1950 in a French expedition. Regards.. Shaun.
