I am 58 years young, live in Johannesburg, South Africa and I'm a true product of my continent. I love the bush, the animals, sunshine, sunsets - oh well, anything to do with nature. I am unmarried and have three sons - 37, 33 and 30 respectively and three granddaugters aged 12, 6 and 4 respectively and obviously the light of my life! Photography has always been a passion and I have loved it since I can remember. I was still using a SLR camera and only switched to digital only in late 2007! My other passion is travel and I have been lucky enough to have travelled fairly widely. There are however still many, many places I would love to visit "one day." I am truly an amateur photographer and do it merely as a hobby. So please be gentle when you comment on my work. :-) Thank you Piet, my dear friend, for convincing me to place my work on Renderosity. You owe me one! Hugs, Carin xx

Probably she was just bored... that's her daily job, and even if you're excited in the beginning, after a while you get bored just sitting and waiting for customers... and I must add the market don't look that busy! Excellent shot with plenty of colors!

These pictures not boring at all. You show the world many of us just read about in a paper but never straight front of us like this. The first woman is lost a hope, just gazing away arm crossed front of her chest as a sign of closed in, give up almost. The lady in a back is just simply bored, looking towards you as you taking a picture of the open stand. She is thinking of you as a customer hoping you will buy something. You don't see that in a front girl. Wonderful colorful items and they realy clever do these things.

Wonderful photo...full of life, even if it leaves us wondering. You never know what folks are thinking. We were taking pictures of some African American women in a market very similar to this some years ago...they became agitated. Turned out they held primitive beliefs that we were stealing their souls by taking their pictures. You just never know. Bill

But you see, these ladies know that what they sell is very good, are well made and what the tourist is looking for. They know the prices are high for locals but fair for tourists. To look to interested is to show a weakness in bargining and so they say - "I offer it. You take buy or you do without." I see good business women who are confident that if they leave the buyer alone they will do better than if they make themselves "visible." BTW, my grandmother bought me one of those small dolls without arms and with the billowing skirt (mine had a black, red and yellow embroided skirt and headpiece) when she went on a world tour and spent time in this area. I was only 7 then but it was my most treasured doll. I cared for it through one marriage and many years into the second. I had to leave it in a box at my parent's house one year when I moved to a smaller apartment and had no room for my doll collection (my grandmother bought me ethnic dolls from all over the world whenever she traveled) and that was the year of the great flood. Their home was totally under water. They lost everything they owned and I lost my precious African doll. I love this. I can imagine my grandmother walking through and choosing that particular doll with me in mind.

Ohhhh ... just look at those textiles! That's it. Next time you go up there, I'm going with you! LOL!

What a fascinating market, I'd have spent a long, long time looking at everything. I'm not surprised Bruce left them a lot of money! Great capture!

Lots of lighting effects, colors, objects and textures in this neato capture, Carin. The lady may also be distressed by the lookie-loos who wander into her establishment, walk around to see what's being featured, and then leave without making a purchase.

i love your fotos, all of them!! This looks so familiar--I see the same looks and the same kinds of faces in Mexico, but what really hits me are the colors, the vibrant pieces and the life in their artwork!!
