WOMEN
Friends coming over
In the morning,
Time for women's group.
They'll come in
One or two at a time
Laughing, talking
So glad to be here
My house will fill up
With love and light
We will eat good food,
And everyone will speak
One by one
Uninterrupted,
Each one
Honored in turn.
Here is a partial list
Of things we know
A lot about:
Real Estate
Ministry
Nail Artistry
Human Resources
Nursing
Accounting
Business
Counseling
Customer service
Software support
We know how to
Teach, dance, quilt, cook
Make jewelry and garden.
We can train dogs
Run a business
Care for the sick
Laugh and cry
Grow and learn
Love
Fight
... and
Tow a fifth-wheel trailer
Behind a big-assed truck
Does that sound
Like a crowd?
How many women
Does it take
To encompass
All those skills,
All that knowledge?
There are only
Eight of us.
We aren't unusual.
There are groups of women
Just like us
Across the country,
And around the world.
We each have other friends
And those connections,
Turn upon turn,
Span the globe.

Great work here! In an odd way, it reminds me of Czech money--the there are more women on Czech money than on American dollars, which is a strangely telling fact that is also quite disturbing...your poem here made me think of that. The whole idea that something like this needs to be said just goes to show how far society has to go, but it's also quite hopeful in that everything addressed adds to a more whole sense of affirmation: that's always a good thing!
