Description

Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.

For how long yet?....The glacier Vatnajökull has been shrinking for some years now, possibly because of climatic changes and recent volcanic activity. I can hardly imagine this view may one day vanish before our future generations come of age to see its beauty. No postwork, except the framing and signature. Enjoy it full size!/b>

Tu as raison, pour combien de temps encore ??? Il y a longtemps que j'ai envie d'aller là-bas...mais je deviens frileux avec l'âge !!! Heureusement il y a des images pour nous faire rêver et la tienne est superbe ; à voir en grande taille, pour sûr.

Fantastic capture Jean-Luc!!! I watched a programme on National Geographic the other night about the shriking of the Icelandic glaciers and it was extremely disturbing. Us humans are really busy messing up this wonderful planet of ours.

So marvelous! I can see the great wooly mammoth slowly moving along the horizon, trunks elevated to catch the sweet, clean air... Wonderful, crisp color and free spirit feeling dwells in the icy landscape.

Unfortunately, the way things are happening climate-wise, it may be all water right up to the distant mountain peaks. It is the land of fire and ice and presently it seems as tho the fire is winning. You always take the best panos whenever you visit places such as this. Thanks for sharing, Jean-Luc.
