Description

Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.

For how long yet?....The glacier Vatnajökull has been shrinking for some years now, possibly because of climatic changes and recent volcanic activity. I can hardly imagine this view may one day vanish before our future generations come of age to see its beauty. No postwork, except the framing and signature. Enjoy it full size!/b>

Thank you very much for your comments and friendly support. Have a nice week!

Jean-Luc this is such a beautiful and breathtaking view and yet it saddens me a bit to realize as you say it may be gone one day. My hope is people will realize what effect they are having on the world around them and change while there is still time.

Wow! The blue of the sky and the reflection in the water are just stunning. You are preserving these wonderful glaciers. I hope they will remain, but it doesn't look good for them. Unfortunately we humans are just destroying everything in our path and those things that are not in our path too.

Beautifully captured Jean-Luc. An interesting question. I just wonder if we are in an inter-glacial period, as we have been many times before, or is it caused by men? Maybe a little of both!!

L' angle de vue est impressionnant ! On a l' impression de suivre le mouvement des blocs de glaces ;D Le ciel refleté sur l' eau est parfaitement capturé lui aussi. J' adore également cet effet de profondeur, magnifique.

It's hard to imagine such gorgeous places on earth (not to mention entire species) becoming extinct and it makes me angry and sad. Thanks for capturing this. It's an awe inspiring work of art by nature captured and appreciated and shown in its glory by you. It's good to know there are human beings who appreciate this planet and are willing to share your work and teach others the importance of something like this.

Absolutly stunning capture - what vivid colors. The whole warming thing concerns me a great deal. I do and encourage others to do what they can in their own life.

This is such a beautiful place and your shot captures that beauty so well. It is a shame to think that this scene may one day disappear. But hopefully images such as yours will help the new generation to remember..

A beautiful scene and such a shame that it is shrinking. We have that problem in New Zealand too. The world would lose great treasures if it lost the glaciers all together.
