Description
Interpreted like a reaction to the subjective overflow of the abstract expressionnism and the figuration of pop art, the minimalism is characterized, inter alia, by a preoccupation with a saving in means. He inherits the famous principle of the architect Mies van der Rohe “Less is more” (“Less c' is more”), works of Malevitch, and recognizes the painter abstracts AD Reinhardt like one from its pioneers with Frank Stella. Carl André thus described paintings with bands of Frank Stella: “The art excludes superfluity, which is not necessary". For Frank Stella, it is proven necessary to paint bands. It there nothing has other in its painting. Frank Stella do not interest himself in the expression or with the sensitivity. It interest himself in the needs for painting… Its bands are the ways that borrow the brush on the fabric. These ways do not lead than with painting.
”If extreme sobriety is well one of qualities common to the work of these artists, it does not constitute, according to them, a goal in itself". Insistence on this characteristic, which presents their works under the angle of poverty, appears a reducing judgement to them so much so that they will reject the name of “minimalism” or “minimal art”. In fact, only the representation of this work is minimal. This is not an art of the reduction, but rather a new artistic experiment removed from any illusionist effect.
