Description

On the eve of the first Christmas Day we went for a walk through town to stretch our legs. Here, in the middle of town is the Hotel 'Alte Post', one of the oldest hotels in Oberammergau. It was very quiet, no pedestrians and cars at all, and it was very cold. As we slowly went from there to the old church I started to think about 'Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht', the Christmas carol the lyrics for which were written by the Austrian priest Father Josef Mohr in 1816 and the melody was composed by the Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818. When this carol is sung in German, in my mind it is the best Christmas carol by far and it gives me chills. After we completed our little walk we went back and had some nice, spiced, hot Gluehwein. What a wunderful atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This picture is dedicated to Jean-Luc who knows more about Bavaria and Bavarian history than I will ever acquire. Freaky - I have a picture that I have taken of that exact hotel but only during daytime and in September 1996. Wonderful image Sig and a great dedi. Wishing you a blessed and joyous Christmas and a smashing 2009 too... :)

This wonderful photo you shot in Bavaria is the surprise of the day for me, Sig :-)It's a very kind attention that means a lot to me, knowing only a little bit of the traditions and beauty of south Bavaria. Yet, I own I was each time I went there, totally smitten by the place. I wish I could see how the inhabitants of Bayern rejoice over the preparation of Christmas/Weihnacht, the only experience I had of the fascination of south Germans for this great festival was in Freiburg (Baden-Würtemberg) and this goes far beyond than the way we consider Christmas in France. What a wonderful scene. Brings back fond memories of several visits there in the late 1970s. Things don't change...I'll bet it looks the same today as it did when we visited 30 years ago...other than a few nice new houses here and there. Bill
