Description

On the eve of the first Christmas Day we went for a walk through town to stretch our legs. Here, in the middle of town is the Hotel 'Alte Post', one of the oldest hotels in Oberammergau. It was very quiet, no pedestrians and cars at all, and it was very cold. As we slowly went from there to the old church I started to think about 'Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht', the Christmas carol the lyrics for which were written by the Austrian priest Father Josef Mohr in 1816 and the melody was composed by the Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818. When this carol is sung in German, in my mind it is the best Christmas carol by far and it gives me chills. After we completed our little walk we went back and had some nice, spiced, hot Gluehwein. What a wunderful atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. This picture is dedicated to Jean-Luc who knows more about Bavaria and Bavarian history than I will ever acquire. I wish everyone in renderosity a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This picture was taken on Christmas Day, 25 December, 2005. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my uploads and a special 'Thank you' to anyone that may have added some of them to their favorites, Sig...

Beautiful :) Yes I agree.. the german version is definitely the most beautiful - heavenly :) Where I live there is a small hospital that many POWs were brought to during WW2. One Christmas eve after a particularly harrowing day for the staff.. they were surprised to hear a glorious chorus of male voices.. singing Stille Nacht. I think many tears were shed that night.

@dragonmuse. Every time I hear this song sung by a choir I tear up and everytime I hear tabs played at a military funeral I tear up getting chills down my spine!
