Description

Date taken 12.17.2008 Wanted to show you how several hundred Canadian geese gathered about the ever decreasing water hole in the middle of a freezing lake here in Kansas. As I looked at cropping the picture, I discovered something I've never seen before. There are five coyotes (look like medium size, slender dogs) observing the geese from among the trees...they are all sitting and are evenly spaced. Do you see all five of them? Quite a sight and there is a second hole in the ice off to the left of this scene with more geese...some swimming, many sleeping and this was at noon time. There were more geese coming all the time...note the approaching flight in the sky. There are even 5-6 white ducks in the right foreground of all the geese. This is bird watching at its best...at least quantity-wise :-) Bill P.S. Have left this a big as possible for you to zoom in on and scroll through. [Should have tried a pano.] P.S.S. Came to find out 70% of coyotes live in groups of 3-7 and have a small range of only a couple of square miles. So, these five stick together and live locally.

Great capture, Bill! Nicely done. I wouldn't have noticed the coyotes ... thanks for pointing them out. Looks like those birds need to fly a bit farther south!

Just wondering if they're real coyotes or just decorative statuettes... The shot is great, awesome view!

Fantastic capture of nature. If the geese stay together and vigilant, they can fight off the coyotes. Free spirits get in trouble quick.

A gaggle for sure.....somebody must leave food as it does not look if there is much available for such a large number of them..

Fabulous contrast between the subject matter and the snow, Bill! I can see only two coyotes out there, and a ton of geese freezing their buns off.

Great capture with the coyotes! At night they work as a team to get their dinner, in the dark when the birds sleep. We hear them night after night. They must be making a plan, how they'll circle around and sneak up.
